Rebekah had been at the tiller of her father's airship for hours. She was following a simple course through the clear skies as the crew harvested the lighter elements of the upper atmosphere. It was a routine mission, and everything was going well. Until she saw the circle of iridescence following her like a shadow.
At first, she thought it was a trick of the light, but as she looked closer, she realized that it was something more. It seemed to be alive, pulsating with its own energy. And it seemed to be calling to her; pulling on her.
She felt an irrational urge to drop herself over the rail into the floating pool of color. She tried to shake off the feeling, but it was too strong. Finally, she decided to take just a quick look. Letting go of the tiller, she walked over to the rail and stared down into the mesmerizing depths. The wind tugged gently at her clothes. When had she climbed up on the rail?
Arthur was adjusting the rigging topside when the airship started to tilt alarmingly. He rushed down to the tiller cabin and found it empty. His daughter was nowhere to be found.
